WordPress.com vs WordPress Self-hosted — Key Differences

  • WordPress.com: Hosted by Automattic, domain in the form yoursite.wordpress.com, free to use, limited plugin support
  • WordPress Self-hosted: Installed on your own hosting, custom domain, full control

Requirements

  • A WordPress.com account with at least 1 site already created
  • An AutoBlogspot account

Step 1: Create an Application Password on WordPress.com

  1. Log in at wordpress.com/me/security/two-step
  2. Go to Account Settings → Security → Application Passwords
  3. Enter the application name "AutoBlogspot" → click Generate Password
  4. Copy the password immediately — it is only shown once

Step 2: Connect in AutoBlogspot

  1. Go to Accounts & Websites → "WordPress.com" tab
  2. Enter:
    • Username: Your WordPress.com login name
    • Application Password: The password you just created
    • Site URL: Full URL, e.g. https://yoursite.wordpress.com
  3. Click "Connect & Verify"

Step 3: Add to a Project and Get Started

Select the WordPress.com site from the website list when creating a project. AutoBlogspot will post to WordPress.com simultaneously with other platforms.

Limitations to Be Aware of on Free WordPress.com

  • The Free plan displays WordPress ads — this does not affect SEO but does affect the user experience
  • Custom plugins cannot be installed on lower-tier plans
  • Upload storage is limited to 3 GB on the Free plan

For auto blog SEO purposes, the Free or Personal ($4/month) plan is sufficient.
